An HSA is an individual account with eligibility and contribution rules, commonly associated with qualifying high-deductible health coverage. Employee and employer contributions both matter when checking the annual contribution limit.

How to read this entry

Use the meaning Health Savings Account alongside the column heading. An earnings amount, an employee deduction and an employer-cost memo can have different effects even when their labels look similar.

Example on a pay statement

If payroll deducts $100 and the employer contributes $25, the account should receive $125 for that period, allowing for processing time. Only the $100 employee contribution is taken from pay.

Examples illustrate the checking method. They are not a personal tax calculation or a promise of a particular benefit.

What to check with payroll

Compare payroll totals with the HSA custodian and account for contributions made outside payroll or by another employer.
