The HSS code that appears on paychecks refers to ‘health service system’ for City and county of San Francisco.

What does HSS mean on a paycheck?

HSS is not a universal payroll abbreviation. Employers and payroll providers can use internal codes that do not have the same meaning from one workplace to another. The most reliable interpretation is the one supplied by the payroll or human resources team that produced your statement.

How to identify the deduction

  1. Check whether HSS appears under earnings, taxes, employer contributions or employee deductions.
  2. Compare the amount with earlier pay periods and any recent benefit elections.
  3. Review your benefits summary, collective agreement or payroll code guide.
  4. Ask payroll to provide the full name of the code and confirm whether it affects taxable wages or take-home pay.

Do not assume it is a tax

Federal payroll taxes normally use recognisable labels such as FIT, FICA, Social Security, OASDI or Medicare. An unfamiliar code should not be treated as a tax, insurance premium or garnishment without confirmation from the employer.

What to ask payroll

Quote the code exactly, identify the pay date and ask whether the amount is employee-paid or employer-paid, pre-tax or post-tax, recurring or one-off. Do not email a complete pay stub containing your Social Security number, bank details or other sensitive information.
